Congratulations on your upcoming marriage. Getting a marriage license is one of those important details that you do not want to forget in the midst of all of the other wedding plans. You can purchase a wedding license up to 90 days before your wedding ceremony.
The marriage license will cost $50. California law requires that both the bride and groom apply together in person for the license. Each of you will need to bring a government issued identification, such as a driver's license or photo ID and a certified copy of your birth certificate. If either of you obtained a divorce within the previous 90 days, you'll need to bring in your divorce decree as well.
Put your license in a safe place until the ceremony, when you will give it to the officiant. The license will be signed by the two of you, the officiant, and your witnesses. The officiant then mails the license to the County Clerk's Office. You will be able to obtain certified copies of your marriage certificate from the county for a fee of $13.
