Enjoy a Julian Winery Tour

Julian wineries

Plan a Julian winery tour. A visit to the charming and historic town of Julian is perfect for a romantic winery getaway.

You will be able to visit seven San Diego wineries and enjoy San Diego’s rural countryside at the same time. Take a romantic carriage ride through the streets of this gold rush town located in the beautiful Cuyamaca Mountains.

After wine tasting in Julian, check out other wineries in and around San Diego:

Julian Winery Tour

Visitors flock to Julian every fall for the annual apple harvest; although apple pie is the dessert of choice all year long. December is a festive season in Julian when the city goes all out decorating and Christmas carolers wearing Victorian costumes celebrate the season.

To begin your Julian winery tour take Highway 15 north from San Diego to begin your getaway. Exit at the Scripps Poway/Parkway/Mercy Road exit and turn right onto Scripps. Go north on Highway 67 into the town of Ramona.

Plan an overnight getaway at Eagles Nest Winery & Cottage. This unique cottage is located high on a hill with panoramic views. The luxurious Italian-style vacation cottage is perfect for a romantic outing. Tour the vineyards and enjoy the fine wines at Eagles Nest as well. The winery is open for wine tasting on weekends from 11 AM until dusk. Address: 18261 Chablis Rd., Ramona

Schwaesdall Winery - San Diego

Just before entering Ramona you will find Schwaesdall Winery (Address: 17677 Rancho de Oro, Ramona ). John Schwaesdall, owner and winemaker, and greets guests himself. He’s friendly and knowledgable and will be happy to tell you about his unique tasting room. Both the tasting room and the inn built next door are made of straw bales for insulation. He built the roof with wine bottles embedded underneath. Schwaesdall has some great wines to sample. My favorite is the Merlot. This winery is a great stop on a Julian winery tour.

Lenora Winery - Ramona

After tasting at Schwaesdall, continue into Ramona where you can stop and enjoy the wines at Lenora Winery (Address: 251 Steffy Lane., Ramona). This small family winery has limited production quality wines at very reasonable prices. Don’t miss their buttery Chardonnay.

In downtown Ramona stop at Pamo Valley Winery, 603 Main St., Ramona. They're open on Fridays 2-6 PM and weekends 11-6PM. Also stop and sample the wines at Pyramid Vineyards and Winery, 130 Magnolia, Ramona. Pyramid is open weekends noon-5PM.

Continue on Hwy. 78 toward Julian. Before reaching Julian you will see Orfila Vineyards (Address: 4470 Hwy. 78, Julian) on the left. This is a popular winery with quite a following. They make great Syrah, Merlot, and Port.

Witch Creek Winery (Address: 2000 Main St., Julian) is located in downtown Julian in the large Stonewall Building. The friendly hostess will be happy to share her knowledge of Julian with you. This winery has many wines to taste. My favorite is their yummy Muscat Love and their white wine called La Chat Blanc. Witch Creek Winery also has a tasting room in downtown Carlsbad. Witch Creek Winery is a "must stop" for your Julian winery tour!

J. Jenkins Winery

J. Jenkins Winery and Menghini Winery are just a few miles out of town near each other. J. Jenkins (Address: 1255 Julian Orchards Dr., Julian) is a small family winery that sold its first bottle of wine in 2003. Owners are Jim and Jeanne Jenkins. Jim is a retired San Diego pediatrician with a long time interest in making wines. Menghini Winery is just a short ways up the road (Address: 1150 Julian Orchards Dr., Julian). My favorite wine here is their excellent Muscat.

Shadow Mountain Vineyards and Winery is a short drive up Hwy. 79 just north of Warner Springs. This is a third generation family winery that has picnic facilities if you want to pack your own lunch.

All of these wineries are open on weekends. J. Jenkins, Lenora, and Schwaesdall are closed weekdays while Shadow Mountain Vineyards is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays.

I can eagerly recommend Romano's Dodge House as a place to dine during your Julian winery tour. (Address: 2718 B St., Julian) for either lunch or dinner. This historic house was converted into a romantic restaurant in the early 1980s. You can enjoy a drink in the cocktail lounge (which is said to be haunted), and dine indoors or under the star on the outdoor patio. The restaurant serves traditional Italian pastas and pizza, but also features more creative hearty Italian dishes. Pork Juliana is their signature dish and can easily be shared by two people. This dish, consisting of loin chops simmered in a whiskey apple cider cream sauce, is delicious.

There are a number of San Diego bed and breakfast inns in Julian as well as an historic hotel. Visit the Orchard Hill Country Inn (rated 4 diamonds by AAA) for a romantic winery getaway that you and your partner will not forget. The casual elegance of Orchard Hill Country Inn will delight you and the many amenities will make you want to return again soon.
