Are you looking for romantic beaches in San Diego? You will find some of the best U.S. beaches along San Diego’s 70 miles of coastline with even more beaches along the inland waters of Mission Bay. There are a wide variety of beaches from small coves, great family beaches, fantastic surfing beaches, less crowded romantic beaches, and even an unsanctioned nude beach.



Blacks Beach Black’s Beach is a famous surfing spot. Though not officially sanctioned, it is well known for its nude bathers due to its isolated location. The 300 foot cliffs surrounding this 2 mile stretch of beach make this one of San Diego’s most beautiful beaches. This uncrowded beach with its gorgeous ocean and cliff views is one of the most romantic beaches in San Diego.

Directions to Blacks Beach from San Diego:
Take I-5 North to La Jolla. Exit at Genesse Avenue and drive west up hill. Turn left onto North Torrey Pines. Turn right onto Torrey Pines Scenic Drive. Take this road until it ends. Park in the dirt parking lot at Torrey Pines GliderPort. Follow the steep trail down to the beach. This is not an easy walk to the beach.


Coronado City Beach

Coronado City Beach is located on Coronado Island not far from the Hotel del Coronado. Activities at this beach include volleyball, kite flying, swimming, surfing, sailing, body or boogie boarding, sun bathing, fire pits, and exploring tide pools.

Directions to Coronado City Beach from San Diego: Go south on Interstate 5. Merge onto CA 75 South toward Coronado. Turn left onto Orange Avenue, then right onto 10th, and left on G Street.



Del Mar Beach Del Mar Beach is a popular beach in a town famous for its horseracing from July through September. Enjoy swimming, walking, surfing, body boarding, picnicking. This is an upscale community with high end shopping, luxury resorts, and restaurants to enjoy as well.

Directions to Del Mar Beach:
From San Diego go north on I-5 to Del Mar. Exit at Del Mar Heights Rd. Turn left onto Del Mar Heights. Turn right onto Camino Del Mar. Turn left on 15th. Turn right on Coast Blvd. Coast Blvd. runs along the beach.


Imperial Beach San Diego Imperial Beach is well known for being the site of the annual U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition. This beach is 20 miles south of San Diego. This beach is less crowded than other beaches and includes a park with picnic, volleyball, and basketball facilities.

Directions to Imperial Beach:
From San Diego drive south on I-5. Exit at Palm Avenue. Turn right onto Palm Avenue. Take a slight left onto Palm. Turn left onto Seacoast. The beach runs along Seacoast.




La Jolla's Children's Pool La Jolla Children’s Pool is a small cove that served as a swimming area for children until seals and sea lions claimed it. Visitors come to this beach to watch the sea life. You can sunbathe, hike, or enjoy a picnic overlooking the beautiful Pacific Ocean.

Directions to La Jolla Children's Pool:
From San Diego drive north on I-5. Exit at La Jolla Parkway West. Merge onto La Jolla Parkway. Stay straight to go onto Torrey Pines Rd. Turn right on Prospect Place. Prospect Pl. becomes Prospect St. Turn right on Jenner St. Take a slight left onto Coast Blvd.




La Jolla Cove La Jolla Cove is located near downtown La Jolla, an upscale San Diego community known for its fine dining and high end shopping. This is the place to go snorkeling or scuba diving. You can enjoy sunbathing, picnicking, and hiking while enjoying the clear waters and spectacular scenery. The scenery makes La Jolla Cove one of the most romantic beaches in San Diego.

Directions to La Jolla Cove from San Diego: Directions to La Jolla Cove:
Take Interstate 5 North. Exit at La Jolla Parkway. This road will become Torrey Pines Rd. Turn right onto Prospect Place. Make a right onto Coast Blvd. If you are lucky, you might find parking on the street, but there are a number of parking garages in the area as well.




La Jolla Shores offers gentle waves and almost one mile of sandy beach. There’s a grassy park nearby that’s perfect for picnicking. This is a great family beach.

From San Diego go north on I-5 and exit at La Jolla Parkway. Turn right at La Jolla Shores Drive. Turn left at Avenida de la Playa. Turn right on Camino del Oro.


Marine Street Beach is located near La Jolla and is popular with body surfers and boogie boarders. Not convenient for families due to lack of restrooms. The rough waters makes it unsafe for children. This is one of the less crowded San Diego beaches.

From San Diego drive north on I-5 toward La Jolla. Exit at la Jolla Parkway West. Merge onto La Jolla Parkway. Go straight onto Torrey Pines rd. Take a slight left onto Girard. Turn right at Pearl. Go left on La Jolla Blvd. Turn right on Marine Street and start looking for a parking place on the street.


Mission Bay San Diego Mission Bay is a recreation paradise. Enjoy bicycling, picnicking, beach bonfires, boating, sailing, waterskiing, windsurfing, jet skiing, rowing, swimming, sunbathing, basketball, and volleyball. There are grassy parks as well as beaches throughout Mission Bay.

Directions to Mission Bay:
Mission Bay covers 4,600 acres. This huge aquatic area has many beaches and is bordered by East Mission Bay Drive to the east Sea World Drive to the south, and Mission Boulevard to the west. To reach this area from Interstate 5 you can exit at East Mission Bay Drive, Grand Avenue, Clairemont Drive, or Sea World Drive.





Mission Beach Rollercoaster Mission Beach This is a busy beach area known for its boardwalk and beachfront rollercoaster. You can enjoy surfing, swimming, kayaking, picnicking, bicycling, rollerblading, running, skateboarding, volleyball, and sunbathing at this beach popular with both locals and tourists.

Directions to Mission Beach:
From Interstate 5 exit at Grand Avenue and go west toward the Pacific Ocean. turn left onto Mission Blvd.


Ocean Beach Ocean Beach has long been considered San Diego’s “hippie” beach neighborhood. This is a relaxing laid back beach community. Enjoy the fishing pier, dog beach, swimming, surfing, volleyball, explore tide pools, and walk along the shoreline. Easily the most friendly dog beach we've been to!

Directions to Ocean Beach:
Go east on I-8 until it ends. Turn left on Sunset Cliffs Blvd. Turn right on Santa Monica Avenue.




Pacific Beach San Diego Pacific Beach is the happening beach in San Diego. Experience the feel of a beach community with its ecletic combination of tourists, surfers, students, and families. Enjoy the mixture of casual food stands, surf shops, unique boutiques, and casual as well as fine dining.
Directions to Pacific Beach:
From Interstate 5 exit at Grand Avenue and go west to the beach.




Silver Strand State Beach is almost 5 miles south of Coronado. This beach has a campground that does not require reservations. Campers are randomly chosen from a lottery type drawing to see who will be admitted.

Directions to Silver Strand State Beach:
From I-5 South merge onto 75 South toward Coronado. Turn left on Orange St/75 S. Follow CA 75 to the beach.


Sunset on a San Diego Beach Sunset Cliffs is located south of Ocean Beach. This area sits atop 68 acres of cliffs dotted with walking trails overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Surfers, photographers, and sunset gazers flock to this area. The scenic cliffs and panoramic ocean scenery makes this one of the most romantic beaches in San Diego.

Directions to Sunset Cliffs Beach:
Take I-8 west. It turns into Sunset Cliffs Boulevard, which takes you to Sunset Cliffs Park.


Torrey Pines State Beach Torrey Pines State Beach is a state park with hiking trails along the bluffs and an uncrowded beach that welcomes swimmers, sunbathers and picnicking.

Directions to Torrey Pines State Beach:
From San Diego travel north on I-5 toward La Jolla. Exit at Carmel Valley Rd. and turn left. Turn left onto N. Torrey Pines Rd.




Sunset Stroll on a San Diego Beach Windansea Beach is popular with surfers, snorkelers, body surfers, and sunbathers. There’s a grassy area perfect for picnics. This beach is covered with rocks which help create a secluded atmosphere and a great place for place for couples to watch the sun sink into the Pacific Ocean. This has to be one of the most romantic beaches in San Diego. There’s a rough surf at this beach due to a hard breaking surf right on the shoreline.
Directions to Windansea Beach:
From San Diego, take Interstate 5 north to La Jolla Parkway. Continue on as it becomes Torrey Pines Road. Follow Torrey Pines Road to Pearl Street and turn right. Turn left on La Jolla Boulevard. Turn right on Nautilus.
